Cam Newton is League Bound

Young Cameron Jerrell Newton has declared for the 2011 NFL Draft. Surprise, surprise. Newton would have been remiss if he didn’t ride this wave to The League.

Cam Newton

Heisman Trophy? Check. BCS National Title? Check. SEC Defensive Player of the Year, AP Player of the Year? Check, check. Now, its time for the Georgia native to collect paper checks, and boy are they gonna roll in.

I’ve said before that Cam is a marketers dream. He is poised, primed and ready for the next chapter in his life, and Ballertainment will be paying close attention.

Congrats young fella.

When the Wife is Bigger Than the Athlete

Some professional athletes have a larger than life persona, transcending their sport and endearing themselves to the hearts of millions. They are super stars in their own right – catching, hitting, dunking, pitching, running and throwing balls, all to the delight of their franchise, fan base, and advertisers. They live enviable lifestyles and have beautiful wives. But, what happens when the wife is the bigger player? Does it make the brand stronger, or cause dissension in paradise?

Anna Benson

Case in point, this week Major League Baseball pitcher Kris Benson has announced his retirement, but his wife Anna is stealing all the shine. During Kris’ tenure in the majors, Anna Benson became the apple of many a fan’s eye, with her “good-time girl” personality and saucy looks. Their stock rose as a couple, and now it seems that fans could care less that Kris is leaving the game, they just want to know how they can get their Anna fix.

The NBA, a Prophesy, and Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant stars in NBA “Where Amazing Happens” commercial

In some instances it would be quite interesting to peer into someone’s future, and apparently the NBA believes so too.

In the latest installment of their “where amazing happens” promo series, a boyish Kevin Durant, wearing his Montrose Christian School team uniform, looks on bashfully as a fan foretells his future.

Jay-Z, FOX and a Touchdown

Music is often the soundtrack of life.

Jay-Z

It can turn the most mundane situation into something fantastic and memorable. It can set the tone for any occasion, happy or sad. Sports are much the same. There are tipping points in the best games or events that elicit raw emotion of jubilance or disappointment.

And This Too Is A Sports Quote – David Letterman?

In more Cam Newton news, the newly minted Heisman Trophy winner made a very handsome appearance Monday on the Late Show with David Letterman to deliver the Late Night Top Ten.

“The Top Ten Things Cam Newton Can Say Now That He’s Won The Heisman Trophy” was funny….

…but Dave ran with the the show when he said “Wow. Look at that guy……. if I looked like that guy, you could all kiss my ass.”

Dave, if you looked as good as Cam Newton does, you’d be getting more ass than you ever imagined.

It’s Tashard’s Choice

Are you bent out of shape about Tashard Choice and his decision to ask Michael Vick for an autograph?

Get over it. What he did was awesome. It was a lesson in camaraderie. There have been varying opinions about this “incident,” so much so that the man has gotten on da Twitta to apologize. And, for what? If it was to appease Jerry Jones or Jason Garrett, so be it, but for the rest of us? Let him be. If you pay close attention to the end of the video, you’ll notice injured Dallas QB Tony Romo approach Vick to show a lil’ love too.

Tashard, here at Ballertainment, you are not looked upon with disdain. Here, you are celebrated for seizing the moment to make your nephew happy. Carry on.

Meet “Mayor” Scottie Pippen

Former Chicago Bull and current team ambassador Scottie Pippen was honored Wednesday by the Chicago Mayor’s Office.

Scottie Pippen in Mayor Daley's Office as tweeted by wife Larsa

Pippen played 17 years in the NBA, won six championships, and made seven All-Star appearances. He earned an All-Star MVP honor, two Olympic gold medals, and in 2010 was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

“It was a historic moment for me personally to be among so many of the Chicago’s powerful politicians,” said Pippen. “Mayor Daley so many others who work at City Hall have done a tremendous job for the City of Chicago. For them to take a break from what I’m sure are 24-hour jobs running the city and providing so many of the things we enjoy meant a lot to me.”

As the legislative body of the city, the City Council usually meets once every month to exercise general and specific powers delegated by state statute. Mayor Richard M. Daley led the proceedings in which a resolution was read citing some of Pippen’s most prominent accomplishments.

Several moments were recalled by various aldermen who supported the proclamation, from Pippen’s dunk over the Knicks’ Patrick Ewing in the Chicago Stadium’s final game during the 1994 NBA Playoffs to carrying a sick and slumped Michael Jordan off the court during the 1997 NBA Finals in Utah.

This, I’m sure, was an awesome moment for Pip (as he is affectionately known,) and his family. Ballertainment sends kudos, and agrees that the recognition was well deserved. Pippen has had some troubling times and learned some tough life lessons. Its nice to see him receive all the goodness he deserves.

You can follow the Pippen’s on Twitter (@scottiepippen and @larsapippen.)
