Louisville wins NCAA Championship game

The 2013 National Basketball Championship is in the books as Louisville wins its 3rd title in program history.

The game was an all out battle of the overall 1 seed and 4 seed, Michigan, and it never disappointed. Both teams played on fire from the onset, but Michigan took control with the “lights out” play of unlikely hero, Spike Albrecht, who entered the game after starting guard Trey Burke headed to the bench with two fouls.

The Wolverines maintained the lead until the last three minutes of the first half when momentum swung Louisville’s way behind a 16 point effort by Luke Hancock. Michigan ended the half with a one point lead, 38-37.

In the second half, the teams went toe-to-toe, but outstanding performances by forward Chane Behanan who finished with 15 and 12, and junior guard Peyton Siva, 18 points and 5 assists, put the Cardinal over the top.

Louisville held tight, seemingly winning the game for their injured teammate, Kevin Ware, who watched from a VIP seat on the side of the raised court. The other big winner Monday night was Coach Rick Pitino, who earlier in the day, had the honor of being named to the 2013 class of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

National player of the year, Trey Burke led all scorers with 24 points. The NBA legacy boys, Tim Hardaway, Jr. and Glenn Robinson III each finished with 12.

The broadcast ended, of course, with the ever anticipated Luther Vandross version of “One Shining Moment,” with an accompanying video that recapped the tournaments highs and lows.

One of the best NCAA championship games I’ve witnessed. So many story lines. So much adrenaline from tip-off to final buzzer.

It was an awesome game, Don. I’d love to see the same Michigan team return next year for another run, but how likely is that?
