Magic Johnson’s son, EJ, opens up about coming out to the public
When EJ Johnson was recently “outed” by TMZ, he didn’t expect it to cause a stir. It did, though, and he has met the challenge with confidence and openness.
Howard Bragman, PR guru and founder of Gwissues, YouTube’s LGBT focused channel, interviewed Johnson to get his thoughts and feelings on having his sexuality revealed on a national platform, and not by choice.
He tells Bragman that he came out to his family “about five years ago” and you can clearly see he is quite comfortable in the skin he’s in.
As you heard in the interview, EJ has a lot of support from influential gay and lesbian personalities in Hollywood, including Bragman who indicated that he was going to help him. Translation — look for Earvin III to make significant moves as a voice for the LGBT community.
Everyone isn’t happy for him, though, and there has been some level of backlash, especially from the Black community. Magic Johnson, who is in full support of his son’s lifestyle, gave some insight to EJ’s truth in a sit down interview with Harvey Levin.
It seems the Johnson family was prepared for this day. EJ said, “it came a little sooner than I thought it would but this is still something I knew I would be going through and would have to experience.”
Their transparency is of no surprise (Magic revealed his HIV status during a press conference in 1991), and I know in the end this will help someone who is struggling with whether or not to acknowledge or reveal their sexuality.
