Ballanthropy: Luol Deng’s Heart Will Always Belong to Sudan

Luol Deng, forward for the Chicago Bulls, returned to his homeland of Sudan (he had not been there in nearly 20 years) in conjunction with the UN Refugee Agency.

The visit was filmed by famed commercial director Bryan Buckley and the footage was turned into a commercial campaign to raise awareness to the plight of the victims and survivors of decades of civil war.

It should be noted that in January, Southern Sudan voted in favor of a referendum granting the region independence from the North. In official acknowledgement, President Obama has stated that come July 2011 the United States will recognize South Sudan as a NEW country. You can read more on this historic event here and here.

Deng had the opportunity to cast his vote as well, in Chicago. Other Southern Sudanese living in several states across the U.S. were Also afforded the opportunity cast their votes.
