Chris Culliver learned a lesson and nothing more
San Francisco 49ers player, Chris Culliver, didn’t make a mistake when he said he had no gay teammates, or that he couldn’t be “with that sweet stuff.”
He spoke, what was at the time, his truth — he was not accepting of homosexuality.
From that, he gained the following lessons.
1 – Don’t mess with the gays.
2 – Don’t mess with the gays.
3 – Hush.
4 – Open your heart and mind.
Culliver never expected his Super Bowl experience to be a case study in bad publicity, I’m sure.
He gave the media a scooby snack that could not be refused, and they ran with it.
When news of his remarks circulated, I wondered why the interviewers did not reign him or change the subject when his comments went awry, but that would have been too much like right, I suppose.
Since his bout with ignorance, Culliver has personally been faced with never-before-seen media scrutiny, insults, and demands that he not play in Sunday’s Super Bowl game.
The result is that he issued and apology and will be required to engage in sensitivity training. Its a necessary evil, in my opinion, as I am quite sure that he has been called a nig in his lifetime or racially profiled, and no one had to go to sensitivity training for that.
Is it double-edged? Yes.
Should he have known better? Yes.
But, he had to learn the hard way, before the public’s eye, and for that I feel sorry.
We are all ignorant of something, honestly or selectively, so the correct level of sensitivity would do us all a world of good.
Chris will play Sunday, and for the duration of his football career, this will be an issue. I hope he takes this lesson and applies it in a way that will make a difference in someone’s life.
Again, he spoke his truth, and part of life is gaining new truths.
