NBA Cancels Vegas Summer League

The ghost of lockouts past is lurking as news that the NBA will cancel its annual summer league play.

Wait, NO SUMMER LEAGUE???

Summer league, held in Las Vegas, usually begins in late July. It is a tournament held to evaulate talent. It is a gathering of rookies, first year players, seldom used players, players who may have been injured during the season, coaches, GM’s, scouts, apparel execs, journalists, bloggers, etc. It is a showcase of sorts. It is a slice of baskeball heaven to those who love the game.

The fact that it has already been cancelled speaks volumes about what the league expects of pending labor negotiations.

Also falling victim to a possible lockout is the league’s summer internship program.

I’m not sure if sports, in general, can tolerate two lockout situations. The NFL’s drama is enough. We don’t need the NBA in the mix, but I have a well informed inkling that their battle will be just as contentious.
