Taking On Tyson – Episode 4 Recap

“I just wanna do something that I believe is um, a good thing. I need to feel that I’m worth something, and this makes me feel like I’m worth something…..you know what I mean? Helping people less fortunate.”

Episode for begins with Tyson paying a visit to the New Jersey branch of the Police Athletic League. He participates in a fun game of dodgeball with the kids in a nearby park, then returns to the facility for some Q & A. The kids are so enamoured with him, and affectionately call him, “Mike Tyson.” Its heartwarming to hear them refer to him this way.

With seven days until Tyson’s charity race, instead of continuing to train the homing pigeons, Tyson’s Corner spends its time preparing for a fancy competition. Fancies are show pigeons (homing pigeons are for racing). This wasn’t the best decision; they’ve gone two weeks without training the homers, and this could come back to haunt the team.

At the fancy competition, Tyson entered two birds, but only one placed first, a black cap. With that victory behind the team, they returned their focus to preparing the Team Lyndhurst homing pigeons for the Mike Tyson Charity Race.

Charity Race Team Lyndhurst member Helder Rodrigues hit a snag with his birds. They are fat and sick. He takes them to Vinnie Torre for evaluation, and they get some meds and Helder receives direction to get the birds some extra exercise to deal with the weight issue. After some extra effort, Helder’s pigeons are deemed race ready.

For the charity race, there were three clubs (Bronx, Lyndhurst, and Brooklyn – Viola). Each club entered five lofts, and each loft entered five birds. 75 birds competed in the race, and in the end, the Brooklyn Viola team, led by the legendary Joe Green, prevailed – AGAIN. Lyndhurst Club took second.

Next week, we get a glimpse into Tyson’s family life, and Tyson’s Corner continues to prepare for the major pigeon race.

Taking on Tyson can be seen Sunday nights on Animal Planet, 10 E/P.
