UPDATED! Nets, Knicks tipoff Thursday despite Sandy

Hurricane Sandy doesn’t stop Nets and Knicks from opening the NBA season in New York

Although Hurricane Sandy ravaged the Eastern Seaboard and flooded parts of New York City, the game will go on for the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Many were speculating on the games fate, but the NBA spent much time assessing the situation and this evening it has been announced that the much anticipated tipoff with take place.

This is the first-ever regular season game in Barclays Center and the first regular season game of the Brooklyn Nets (formerly the New Jersey Nets) franchise.

While it is a completely celebratory occasion for Brooklyn, the New York Knicks will be without star forward Amar’e Stoudemire. Stoudemire will have surgery on his left knee and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks of participation.

The Nets and Knicks tipoff Thursday at 7 PM ET, on TNT.

UPDATE as of Wednesday, October 31, 2012: The Thursday game between the Nets and Knicks at Barclays Center has been postponed due to the after-effects of Hurricane Sandy. Also, the Nets practice facility in East Rutherford, NJ was damaged during the storm in addition to rookie Tyshawn Taylor being stranded in his Hoboken residence, unable to join his teammates at Wednesday’s practice. I hope he is safe.
